The Great Canadian Guide to the Movies (and TV) Presents...

And now it's time for that most ethically inappropriate, but culturally imperative question...

Who Are Canada's
Most Beautiful Stars???

VOTING IS NOW CLOSED FOR THE CURRENT CONTEST

The votes from you -- the public -- are in for the Great Canadian Guide to the Movies (& TV)'s first Babes Contest.  So how did it go?  Well, for our first attempt, with limited publicity, it went well.  We got responses from surprisingly far away (voters from Poland, India, and Latin America just to name some).  Obvious names cropped up like Pamela Anderson, Marie-Josee Croze and Lexa Doig, but fans also registered preferences for some unexpected faces like Christopher Heyerdahl, Alexis Kanner and the revived Newsroom's Matt Watts (a late vote, but what the hey).  But who actually came out on top?

Well, as it turns out, a certain fandom seemed to have gone into overdrive, putting out the word on a few message boards, ralling support for certain celebs, pushing two to the front of the pack -- which is fine.  More power to 'eem.  But, as such, we'll also throw in an honourable mention/runner up category, just to broaden the results.

So -- drumroll please -- without further ado, The Winners of the August, 2004 Great Canadian Guide to the Movies and TV Most Beautiful Canadian Star Contest are.....

HONOURABLE MENTIONS
MALE:  Chris Potter - Has been a regular in such TV series as Material World, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, Queer as Folk (the North American version) and currently co-stars in Zoe Busiek: Wild Card
FEMALE: Amy Price-Francis - Has appeared in Little Men, Tracker, Train 48 and, most recently, starred in Snakes & Ladders

and THE WINNERS ARE...
MALE:  Roy Dupuis - Popular bilingual actor has long tried to straddle being both a hunky heart throb in populist productions, and an edgy actor willing to tackle risky projects, in both French and English.  He first became popular in French language productions in Quebec, then gained some recognition in the rest of Canada, and has developed an international heart throb profile (as his topping the poll with close to a whopping 70 percent of the votes attests) thanks to the cult spy TV series, Nikita.  Some fans also mentioned his involvement with such philanthropic organizations as MIRA Foundation and Rivers Foundation.
FEMALE:  Alberta Watson  -  Has acquired a long list of credits, both in Canada and Hollywood (usually in films)  but her supporting part in the TV series Nikita (yeah, the Nikita fans again) has obviously secured her a whole new fandom.

And so there you have it, the web lurkers have spoken.  So what have we learned from this little exercise?  Well, firstly, some voters tried to stuff the box by voting multiple times for the same person (bad form, folks -- we didn't penalize anyone, but multiple votes were only counted as one).  Secondly, female voters exceeded male voters by a good margin (and here I thought most of the voters would be guys drooling over their favourite femme).  And, thirdly, never understimate the fandom of Nikita.

So, feel your fav didn't get his/her due?  Well, keep an eye on this page.  'Cause if we did it once, we'll probably do it again and call for another vote in a year, or six months, or three months?  Who knows?   Just get ready to vote for the Most Beautiful Canadian Star when we open up the polls again (but not before then).
